A dramatic rescue unfolded at a busy Boston-area subway station when two police officers jumped directly onto the tracks to save an injured person just moments before an oncoming train arrived.

Newly released bodycam footage from the Cambridge Police Department shows the tense moments that played out on Wednesday, Jan. 14, after officers received urgent reports that someone had fallen onto the tracks and needed immediate help.

The incident happened at the Central station on the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority, one of the system’s busiest stops in Boston.

In the footage, the two officers can be seen sprinting through the station toward the platform as alarms blare. As they approach the edge, one officer can be heard warning the other that the situation is extremely dangerous.

“The nearest train is in one minute,” one officer says.

Without hesitation, both officers agree they have no time to wait. They immediately jump down onto the tracks, entering the pit below as the clock ticks down. Working quickly, they reach the injured person, lift them up, and hoist them onto the platform.

Seconds later, the officers pull themselves back to safety, narrowly avoiding what could have been a catastrophic outcome.

Police later confirmed that the individual who fell onto the tracks suffered only minor injuries thanks to the officers’ rapid response. The cause of the fall was not detailed in the footage release.

The two officers were publicly commended for their bravery during a police roll call, with department leaders praising their split-second decision-making and willingness to put their own lives at risk to save another person.

The dramatic rescue has since drawn attention for highlighting both the dangers of crowded transit systems and the extraordinary risks first responders sometimes take in the line of duty — especially when every second counts.
