6 Dead, One Critical After Pickup Slams into Transit Bus in Horrifying Crash

A devastating highway crash in Northern California has left six people dead and another fighting for their life after a violent head-on collision between a pickup truck and a transit bus that erupted into flames.

According to the California Highway Patrol, the crash happened Wednesday morning around 10 a.m. on Highway 99W in Tehama County, roughly north of Sacramento. Investigators believe the driver of a gray Toyota Tacoma, traveling southbound, crossed over the center line into oncoming traffic and slammed directly into a county transit bus.

The impact was catastrophic.

Authorities say the pickup truck driver was killed instantly. The bus driver and four passengers were also pronounced dead at the scene. Moments after the collision, the bus burst into flames, creating a chaotic and heartbreaking scene for first responders.

One surviving bus passenger was airlifted to Enloe Medical Center in Chico with critical, life-threatening injuries.

The Tehama County Fire Department confirmed crews rushed to the scene to assist, urging the public to avoid the area due to extensive road closures and emergency activity. A stretch of Highway 99W in Richfield between Gyle Road and Sonoma Avenue was shut down for hours while firefighters battled the blaze and investigators worked the wreckage. The roadway has since reopened.

Officials said the Toyota pickup was traveling at an unknown speed at the time of the crash. Investigators have not yet determined whether drugs or alcohol played a role.

Authorities are still working to identify all of the victims. CHP has asked anyone with identifying information regarding the occupants of the transit bus to contact the Tehama County Coroner’s Office.

In the aftermath of the tragedy, Tehama County Public Works announced that TRAX, the company operating the bus service, suspended all transit operations for the remainder of Wednesday and Thursday.

“Due to a tragic bus incident resulting in fatalities, TRAX is suspending all transit service out of respect for the families affected and the employees of TRAX,” the agency said in a statement, adding that service is expected to resume Friday if operationally possible.
