A deadly bus crash in southern Turkey has left at least eight people dead and dozens more injured after a coach plunged roughly 50 feet down a ravine, authorities said.
The crash happened near the coastal city of Antalya when the bus lost control while approaching a multi-level intersection. Officials said heavy fog and slick road conditions likely played a role in the tragedy.
According to local reports, the coach smashed through metal roadside barriers before tumbling down the steep slope. Several passengers were reportedly thrown from the bus as it went over the edge.
Emergency responders rushed to the scene, where rescue crews worked among twisted wreckage to reach survivors. At least 26 people were injured, and officials said several remain in critical condition.
Provincial Governor Hulusi Sahin said the road conditions were especially dangerous at the time of the crash.
“The ground was wet and there was fog in the area,” Sahin said. “It’s not a place to speed, but it appears the bus was traveling too fast.”
