A food influencer has tragically died after filming herself eating what’s known as one of the most poisonous crabs in the Philippines.

Emma Amit, 51, passed away in the hospital on February 6, just two days after recording a video of herself hunting, cooking, and eating the Zosimus aeneus crab — ominously nicknamed the “Devil Crab.”

According to iNaturalist, the species is considered potentially lethal due to powerful neurotoxins found in both its flesh and shell. The site notes that it is regarded as the most poisonous crab in the Philippines, with about half of reported intoxication cases ending in death.

Despite the risks, Emma decided to document the experience for her followers.

In the now widely reported video, she is seen foraging for seafood near her home in Puerto Princesa, Palawan. Along with snails and shellfish, she collected the toxic crab, cooked it, and ate it on camera.

Local officials say things quickly took a devastating turn.

Barangay Chief Laddy Gemang told Philippine outlet ABS-CBN that Emma later lost consciousness and was rushed to the hospital, where she died. Tragically, a friend who also consumed the crab reportedly passed away as well.

When authorities visited her home, they discovered several crab shells, underscoring the severity of the incident. Gemang issued a strong warning to residents not to consume the so-called Devil Crab, stressing how quickly it can become fatal.

He also expressed shock over what happened, noting that Emma and her husband were experienced fisherfolk who lived by the sea and were likely familiar with the dangers.

The heartbreaking incident has sparked renewed warnings about the deadly species and the risks of consuming wild-caught seafood without proper knowledge.
