For nearly a quarter of a century, Barbara Byrd woke up every day with the same haunting thought:
Is my cousin alive — or are we grieving someone we’ll never see again?
On Friday, that decades-long mystery shattered in the most unexpected way.
Michele Hundley Smith — the North Carolina mother who vanished in December 2001 while out Christmas shopping — has been found alive.
“I kind of want to go outside and scream, ‘She’s alive!’” Byrd said after learning the news.
The Rockingham County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that Smith, who was 38 when she disappeared from her Eden home, is safe and still in North Carolina. However, at her request, officials will not release her location. Authorities also said no charges are expected.
When Smith vanished, she left behind three children. Her car was never found. There were no clear answers. No goodbye. Just silence.
Over the years, her case gained regional and national attention. It was discussed on television and featured in true crime podcasts. Her family gave interviews, pleaded for tips, and refused to let her name fade away.
But privately, they lived in limbo.
“For years, we didn’t know if we were grieving or waiting,” Byrd said.
Now, relief and heartbreak are tangled together.
The biggest question still lingers: Why?
“My biggest question is to her … what happened all those years ago? What made you leave?” Byrd said.
Learning Michele is alive brought an overwhelming wave of gratitude — even though she has chosen not to share her location or reconnect publicly.
“I understand and respect that she doesn’t want any of us to contact her,” Byrd said. “I’m not angry.”
Instead, she’s holding onto one simple truth.
“The biggest answer I had today was she was alive. Nothing else matters right at this moment.”
Byrd says she always believed her cousin was still out there somewhere.
“I never thought Michele was dead. I knew she was alive. It’s just a feeling I had my whole life.”
Years ago, Michele’s youngest brother made Byrd promise they would find her. He has since passed away.
“He asked me to promise that we would find her,” she said. “She’s OK, Brian.”
Smith’s daughter Amanda is still processing the news and plans to release a statement soon, thanking everyone who supported the family through the long years of uncertainty.
After 24 years of questions, there is finally one undeniable answer.
She’s alive.

Sounds like a bunch of Democrat stoners… at least it was all in this 21st Century…
Well – whatever; even if the family isn’t really ticked off she just disappeared and left everyone hanging all these years in doubt and grief, she IS responsible for all the resources and expenditures in searching for her – and I would think that would amount to hundreds of thousands of dollars. Is anyone going to hold her responsible for at least THAT???!!!
This woman is disgusting leaving your children like that. Didn’t care if they were ok just abandoned them. Probably met some guy and nothing else mattered. I wouldn’t want to hear anything she had to say, family members passed away and she didn’t care. Probably had more kids and forgot about the others. What a sorry excuse for a human being. And yes she should be charged she knew they were looking for her and just let them waste resources someone else could have used.
I totally agree!!
