A terrifying crash just outside Cincinnati turned into a massive fireball when a car collided with a fuel tanker late at night, sending flames and thick smoke billowing into the sky.

The dramatic accident happened shortly after 10 p.m. on Interstate 471 near the Memorial Parkway exit in Newport, Kentucky.

Authorities say the crash caused the fuel tanker to tip over, spilling fuel onto the highway. Moments later, the fuel ignited, triggering a huge explosion and fire that quickly spread across the roadway.

The fiery scene forced officials to shut down all lanes of the interstate as emergency crews rushed to the area.

Two children, ages 6 and 12, who were inside the car involved in the crash were taken to a nearby hospital. Officials say their injuries appear to be minor.

A woman who was also in the vehicle was transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries as well.

The driver of the tanker truck, a 47-year-old man, was treated at the scene.

Flames from the crash were so intense that they spread through the highway’s drainage system and into a nearby sewer line. Fortunately, officials say no structural damage has been reported so far.

Videos captured by bystanders show the enormous blaze burning in the middle of the highway, with a towering column of smoke rising into the night sky.

Emergency responders from multiple agencies, including Campbell County Emergency Management and state highway officials, quickly arrived at the scene to battle the fire and secure the area.

Officials say both northbound and southbound lanes of Interstate 471 will remain closed while crews continue to investigate the crash and clear the wreckage.

The exact cause of the collision is still under investigation.
