A devastating deadly bus crash in Nepal has left seven people dead and several others injured after the vehicle plunged off a mountain road.

Authorities say the crash happened Saturday, March 14, in Nepal’s Gorkha District when a bus carrying more than a dozen passengers suddenly veered off the road and tumbled down a steep hillside.

According to police, five men and two women were killed in the crash. Officials identified the victims as Tamilarsi, 60, Meenakshi, 59, Muthu Kumar, 58, Anamalik, 58, Meena, 58, Vijayal, 57, and Sivagami, 53.

Several others were injured in the accident, including at least seven Indian pilgrims traveling on the bus, as well as the driver and his assistant. Emergency crews rushed to the scene, pulled the injured passengers from the wreckage and transported them to nearby hospitals. Authorities have not yet released details about the severity of their injuries.

The bus had reportedly been traveling along a winding mountain route after returning from the popular Manakamana Hindu Temple when the crash occurred.

Officials said the vehicle was heading toward the Anbukhaireni area of Tanahun District when it lost control on a curve while traveling downhill.

The bus reportedly fell about 500 feet down the mountainside into a ravine near Shahid Lakhan village, roughly 75 miles west of Nepal’s capital city, Kathmandu.

Investigators say it’s still unclear exactly what caused the crash.

Authorities are now examining several possible factors, including the speed of the bus, potential mechanical problems and the condition of the mountain road at the time of the accident.
