A relaxing day on the slopes turned into a nightmare in seconds.

A skier was killed after a gondola suddenly broke loose from its cable and came crashing down a mountainside at a Swiss resort — and the horrifying moment was caught on camera.

The deadly accident happened Wednesday at the Titlis ski area in Engelberg, a popular destination for international travelers. Witnesses say the cabin jerked violently before detaching from the line and plunging down the snowy slope.

“It just came off and started rolling,” one stunned onlooker said.

Video from the scene shows the gondola tumbling over and over down the mountain, flipping multiple times before ending up completely crushed at the bottom.

Emergency crews rushed in, and a helicopter was sent to the scene as rescuers desperately tried to save the passenger. They reportedly performed CPR for around 30 minutes, but the victim — who was alone inside the gondola — did not survive.

Photos from the aftermath show the mangled wreck sitting in the snow as responders worked around it.

Officials say strong winds were hitting the area at the time, with gusts topping 50 mph, raising serious questions about why lifts were still operating under those conditions.

The resort shut down the lift system immediately after the crash as investigators began looking into what went wrong.

The tragedy is also sparking broader safety concerns. Just a few months ago in Italy, a cable car slammed into a station, injuring multiple people and leaving others stranded thousands of feet in the air.

For many Americans who vacation in Europe’s ski resorts, the shocking incident is a reminder of how quickly things can go wrong — turning what should be a scenic ride into a deadly fall.
