A name tied—however loosely—to one of America’s most haunting unsolved crimes is back in the headlines after a stunning legal reversal.

Randall D. Simons, the photographer who captured images of JonBenét Ramsey just months before her tragic 1996 murder, has just scored a major courtroom victory. The Oregon State Supreme Court has overturned his child sex abuse conviction, sending shockwaves through a case that had already drawn national attention.

Simons was originally arrested in 2019 after authorities alleged he had repeatedly accessed illegal images using public Wi-Fi at a local A&W restaurant. Prosecutors said the activity led to his 2021 conviction on 15 counts of encouraging child sex abuse in the first degree—a serious charge that put him behind bars.

But in a dramatic turn, the state’s highest court ruled that the investigation itself crossed a constitutional line.

According to the court, police violated Simons’ right to privacy during their year-long probe. Even though he had agreed to the restaurant’s Wi-Fi terms—which prohibit illegal activity and allow cooperation with law enforcement—the justices determined that those terms didn’t erase his constitutional protections.

That decision effectively dismantles the foundation of the case.

Despite the explosive headlines, officials made it clear that Simons’ legal troubles have no connection to JonBenét Ramsey’s murder. The photos he took of the 6-year-old beauty pageant contestant in 1996—later sold after her death—showed her fully clothed and were part of standard pageant photography at the time.

Still, those images fueled intense public debate in the late ‘90s over child pageants and how young contestants were portrayed—controversy that Simons himself was caught up in. At the height of that backlash, he reportedly claimed his career was effectively over.

Now, decades later, his name has resurfaced in a completely different kind of legal storm—one that’s far from over.
