Armed Patient Shot by Off-Duty Officer After Chaos Erupts Inside Hospital (Video)

A terrifying late-night scene unfolded at a hospital in Gary, Indiana, after an armed patient was shot by an off-duty police officer inside the facility.

According to authorities, the incident happened around 11:55 p.m. Tuesday at Methodist Northlake Hospital on Gordon Hatcher Boulevard in northwest Indiana.

Hospital officials said panic erupted after reports came in that a patient in the waiting room had displayed a firearm.

Security staff and law enforcement quickly responded to what was initially treated as a possible active shooter situation.

Officials say an off-duty officer ultimately opened fire and shot the armed suspect, who was described only as an adult male.

Police have not yet released the man’s exact age or additional details about what led up to the confrontation.

After being shot, the suspect was transported to another hospital for medical treatment.

Authorities have not publicly disclosed his condition.

Methodist Northlake Hospital later released a statement confirming the frightening incident and emphasizing that weapons are strictly prohibited inside all hospital facilities.

“The safety of our patients and employees remains our top priority,” the hospital said.

Hospital officials also confirmed they are fully cooperating with investigators as the case moves forward.

The Lake County Sheriff’s Department has now taken over the investigation into the officer-involved shooting.

Meanwhile, Gary police confirmed the off-duty officer involved in the shooting has been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation, which is standard procedure in police-involved shootings.

No other injuries were reported during the chaotic incident.

Investigators continue working to determine exactly what happened inside the waiting room before shots were fired.
