A deadly overnight crash on Interstate 95 in Virginia left at least five people dead and dozens more injured after a bus slammed into several vehicles near a work zone, according to Virginia State Police.
The horrifying crash happened around 2:35 a.m. Friday in Stafford County as traffic was slowing in the southbound lanes near a construction area.
Police said the bus “failed to slow for traffic” and crashed into six vehicles. All five people who died were inside vehicles hit by the bus.
The wreck also sent 34 people to the hospital, including three who were listed in critical condition.
Nineteen patients were taken to Mary Washington Hospital in nearby Fredericksburg. Hospital officials said five of those patients have since been discharged, while two remained in critical condition.
Another 12 patients were taken to Stafford Hospital, and all of them have since been released, according to Mary Washington Healthcare.
Images released by Virginia State Police showed the devastating aftermath of the crash, which shut down a stretch of I-95 and sparked a massive emergency response in the early morning darkness.
Investigators said charges are pending, though authorities have not yet made clear who may be charged.
The National Transportation Safety Board announced it is sending a team to Virginia to investigate the crash.
State police said the investigation remains ongoing.
The chaos did not end with the initial wreck. A Virginia State Police spokesperson later confirmed that two additional crashes happened near the original crash scene, according to CBS affiliate WUSA-TV.
