A 68-year-old woman was saved from drowning after deputies pulled her from the ocean and revived her during a terrifying weekend swim at a Florida beach.
The rescue happened around 10:15 a.m. on Saturday, June 6, off the coast of New Smyrna Beach, according to the Volusia Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies responded after receiving reports of “a swimmer in distress in the ocean.” When they arrived, the woman was found floating face down in the water.
Deputy Gourley quickly reached the woman and pulled her to shore with help from a beachgoer. She was unresponsive and had no pulse.
Deputy Gourley and Deputy Manhart immediately began performing CPR.
“The woman was unresponsive and without a pulse,” the sheriff’s office said. “Deputy Gourley and Deputy Manhart immediately began CPR and were able to revive the 68-year-old woman.”

One deputy asks bystanders, “Does anybody know her?” Someone nearby responds, “No, nobody, no.”
Moments later, one of the deputies says, “She’s breathing.”
Another officer then encourages the woman as she begins to regain consciousness.
“Keep breathing … big deep breaths if you can hear me, girl,” the deputy says. “Squeeze my hand if you can feel it.”
The woman can then be heard exhaling loudly as sirens sound in the background.
Beach Safety crews arrived and continued life-saving efforts before the woman was taken to the hospital in stable condition.
Her name has not been released.
The sheriff’s office said the rescue is a reminder of how important it is for beachgoers to stay alert and report emergencies quickly.
“This serves as a powerful reminder that alert beachgoers, like those who spotted the woman and quickly alerted deputies, can make all the difference,” the Volusia Sheriff’s Office said.
The department said life-saving awards are expected for the deputies involved in the rescue.
