A British paraglider has died in Spain after reportedly becoming tangled in power lines during a flight near the foothills of the Pyrenees.
The 63-year-old man, who has not been publicly identified, was flying over Palau de Noguera in Lleida, Catalonia, on Wednesday afternoon when the fatal accident happened.
Emergency crews were called to the scene at around 1:20 p.m. local time. Firefighters, medical teams, several fire engines and helicopters were sent to the area, but the man could not be saved.
A spokesperson for the regional government said firefighters received a call about a paragliding accident in the Palau de Noguera area, which is part of the municipality of Tremp.
“Immediately, three fire crews from the Tremp and Sort fire stations were activated,” the spokesperson said.
Officials said crews searched the area and found the man seriously injured. Firefighters provided initial medical care until emergency medical teams arrived.
“The regional Mossos d’Esquadra police were also mobilised,” the spokesperson added.
Police are now investigating the circumstances surrounding the man’s death, though sources said it is being treated as an accident.
Palau de Noguera sits near the Pyrenees mountain range and is often used as a base for people visiting nearby Àger, a small village popular with paragliders.
The tragedy comes just weeks after another paraglider had a terrifying near miss in the Austrian Alps.
In May, a 44-year-old woman named Sabrina was paragliding near Schmittenhohe mountain on her birthday when a Cessna aircraft reportedly tore through her parachute canopy during a sightseeing flight.
The damage forced her to deploy her reserve parachute. Emergency crews later said it was extremely fortunate that nobody was seriously hurt.
Sabrina later shared her shock on Instagram, writing, “Happy birthday to me. The day a Cessna 172 takes you out of the sky while you’re paragliding…”
She said she still could not believe she survived with only bruises and minor injuries.
Emergency personnel described that incident as a miracle, but the latest accident in Spain ended in tragedy.
