A hospital worker in Europe has been arrested after police say he stole human body parts from his workplace, kept them inside his home and allegedly admitted to eating some of them.

The disturbing case centers on a 30-year-old man from Budapest, Hungary, who police say had an “obsessive” interest in human anatomy and pathology.

Authorities allege the man used his job as a hospital orderly to obtain body parts from his workplace. He is also accused of scavenging through corpses in abandoned cemeteries in Hungary and Slovakia.

Police began investigating after receiving reports about the man’s bizarre behavior. When officers raided his apartment, they allegedly found a horrifying collection.

Investigators said they seized skulls, a complete lower leg, a hand and what appeared to be a reconstruction of a human face made from facial skin. Other bones were reportedly found stored inside a suitcase.

Police also discovered a heart in a jar, though investigators are still working to determine whether it came from a human or an animal.

According to authorities, the man confessed that he had an “irresistible obsession” with human anatomy. Police said he admitted he had repeatedly cooked and eaten stolen body parts.

In a statement, police said the man was “passionate about anatomy and pathology” and liked to dissect animals. Authorities also said he allegedly spoke about his interest with friends and family and took photos of his collection.

Investigators seized his computer, laptops, tablets, mobile phones, SIM cards and data cards as part of the probe.

All of the recovered remains will now be examined by forensic experts in an effort to identify them and determine where they came from.

The man has been detained on suspicion of illegally possessing and using human remains. Police said additional charges could be filed once experts complete their examination of the body parts.

The gruesome allegations have drawn comparisons to some of the most notorious cannibalism cases in criminal history, including Jeffrey Dahmer, the American serial killer who murdered and dismembered 17 men and boys between 1978 and 1991.

Dahmer later admitted to preserving and eating parts of some of his victims before he was beaten to death in prison in 1994.

In the Budapest case, police have not publicly identified the suspect. Investigators are still working to determine how many remains were taken, where they came from and whether the alleged crimes extend beyond the hospital and abandoned cemeteries already under investigation.
