A 13-year-old Texas boy is lucky to be alive after he was struck by lightning inside his own bedroom while playing video games.
Vlad Skuridin was sitting at his desk in his Cypress home on Tuesday when a storm rolled through the area and lightning suddenly struck the house, KPRC 2 News reported.
“I was just sitting here, everything was going fine. I was playing video games, I was not expecting anything,” Vlad told the outlet.
Then, without warning, the lightning traveled into his bedroom and struck him in the abdomen through a metal piece of his desk that was touching his skin.
“I just jumped out really fast and I started screaming,” the shaken teen recalled.
The terrifying moment left Vlad convinced he might not survive.
“It was crazy. I honestly thought I was gonna die,” he said. “Like, I did not think I was going to survive that. I don’t know how I survived it.”
The Skuridin family believes lightning first hit a nearby tree before the bolt of electricity traveled into their home and reached Vlad through the metal part of his desk.
The strike also sparked a small fire in the family’s attic. Investigators believe the electrical current moved through the home’s wiring system and ignited the blaze.
Vlad’s father immediately called 911, and firefighters and local police rushed to the Cypress home. Thankfully, the damage was minor, though the strike did leave a hole in one wall.
Emergency medical crews evaluated Vlad at the house and determined he did not need to be taken to the hospital.
“I’m feeling fine, but I’m still a little shocked and dizzy,” Vlad said Tuesday evening.
He clarified that the dizziness was not from the electrical shock itself, but from the shock of what had just happened.
“Not from the shock, from the lightning, but just everything that happened here is crazy,” he said.
Although the frightening incident did not leave him with any permanent scars, Vlad said it gave him a new perspective.
“Anything can happen at any moment. You just got to be nice to everybody,” he told KPRC 2 News.
“It can end whenever,” he added. “It can end whenever you want, man.”
After the lightning strike, Mark Herman of the Harris County Constable Precinct 4 issued a safety reminder as more storms were expected in the Cypress area.
“Safety Reminder: During thunderstorms, avoid using corded electronics and stay away from electrical wiring and plumbing, as lightning can travel through a home’s electrical system,” the precinct wrote on Facebook.
For Vlad and his family, what started as a normal afternoon of gaming turned into a terrifying reminder of just how powerful a thunderstorm can be.
