Mexican rock musician Jonathan Meléndez, his pregnant wife, the family’s nanny and even their pet dog were found dead inside the family’s home in a horrifying case that has shocked Mexico.
Meléndez, 38, was a founding member and keyboardist of the indie rock band Camilo Séptimo.
Authorities said the musician was found dead alongside his 35-year-old wife, Ana Paola, who was about four months pregnant, and their three-year-old daughter.
The family’s 21-year-old nanny, Aleida Romero Victorio, was also killed.
Investigators said the family dog was found dead as well, with its legs tied.
In a stunning development, the couple’s six-year-old child was discovered alive and unharmed inside the home, according to prosecutors.
The killings happened Tuesday evening at the family’s penthouse near Mexico City, with authorities placing the attack sometime between approximately 5:30 p.m. and 7:40 p.m.
Officials said all four human victims had been shot.
The state prosecutor initially identified the musician only by his initials, J.S.M.O., before reports linked him to Meléndez.
The death of the nanny has also devastated her family.
“She was a very hardworking and responsible girl who did not deserve for this to be done to her,” her aunt, Lorena Victorio Cabrera, told CNN.
Camilo Séptimo later released an emotional tribute to Meléndez and his family.
“Today we honor and celebrate his life, his music, his light, and what he shared with those of us fortunate enough to know him and walk alongside him,” the band wrote on social media.
The group also said Meléndez and his child would “live forever in our hearts.”
Mexican authorities have already arrested two men in connection with the killings.
Omar García Harfuch, Mexico’s secretary of public security, announced the arrests on social media.
One of the suspects was allegedly a business associate of one of the victims and is accused of using that relationship to gain access to the family’s home.
Authorities have not publicly revealed a motive for the attack.
Meléndez helped form Camilo Séptimo in 2013 alongside singer Manuel Mendoza and guitarist Erik Vázquez.
The band became known for its atmospheric indie rock sound and drew inspiration from artists including Daft Punk, Arctic Monkeys and Devendra Banhart.
Camilo Séptimo has released four studio albums. Its most recent record, “Jardín de las almas,” was released in 2023.
The killings have stunned fans and the Mexican music community as investigators continue working to determine exactly what led to the deadly attack.
