Passenger Jumps Overboard from Carnival Cruise Ship in Terrifying Incident

A Carnival cruise to Southern California took a frightening turn Saturday after a male passenger went overboard while the ship was sailing from Mexico back to California.

The incident happened aboard Carnival Panorama as the vessel traveled from Puerto Vallarta toward Long Beach on the final day of a weeklong Mexican Riviera cruise. Carnival confirmed that the missing guest was a man traveling with family members.

According to Carnival, the ship’s crew launched its missing-person procedures after being alerted that the guest could not be found. That included reviewing security footage and notifying both U.S. and Mexican maritime authorities.

A passenger told TMZ that relatives first searched for the man before contacting guest services. He was then reportedly paged over the ship’s announcement system at around 10:30 a.m.

Surveillance footage later confirmed that the man had gone overboard, according to the report.

Carnival Panorama then reversed course around 2 p.m. and began searching waters along Mexico’s Baja peninsula.

The ship continued searching for roughly two and a half hours before resuming its voyage toward Long Beach around 4:30 p.m., according to passengers aboard the vessel.

ABC7 reported that passengers were temporarily instructed to return to their cabins during the shipwide search, turning what should have been the final relaxing day of the cruise into a tense emergency.

Carnival said both the U.S. and Mexico Coast Guards had been notified and that the company was supporting the man’s relatives.

“Carnival is providing support to the family who was traveling with the guest, and our thoughts and prayers are with them and their loved ones,” the cruise line said.

As of the latest reports, the man’s identity had not been released and his condition remained unknown.

The incident also prompted an emotional response from other passengers.

Videos shared on social media showed travelers creating a small remembrance area aboard the ship, leaving handwritten messages, prayers, teddy bears and the small rubber ducks that cruisers often hide and trade during voyages.

One passenger, Misty Hernandez, said many people aboard had never met the missing man but still felt deeply affected by what happened.

The impromptu memorial became a place for passengers to stop, leave messages and show support for his family while the ship continued toward California.

Carnival Panorama ultimately resumed its route to Long Beach, where the cruise had originally begun. Carnival regularly operates Mexican Riviera sailings from the Southern California port, including trips to destinations such as Puerto Vallarta, Cabo San Lucas and Mazatlán.
