A student was found dead and another was hospitalized after a firearm discharged inside a classroom at Atlanta Technical College on Monday morning, prompting a police investigation and an emergency response on campus.

The incident occurred around 8:45 a.m. on October 19 at the college’s campus on Metropolitan Parkway in southwest Atlanta, Georgia.

According to the Atlanta Police Department, officers responded to reports of a shooting and discovered a male student dead inside a campus bathroom from what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

A second student had suffered a gunshot wound to the leg and was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment.

Investigators said the injured student was conscious and alert when emergency responders arrived. College officials later confirmed that the injuries were not life-threatening and that the student was expected to recover.

As detectives examined the circumstances surrounding the incident, they uncovered a troubling sequence of events.

According to the preliminary investigation, a 60-year-old student had brought a firearm into a classroom when the weapon accidentally discharged, striking another student in the leg.

Police believe the student who possessed the gun then left the classroom and entered a nearby bathroom, where he was subsequently found dead.

Authorities have not publicly released the names of either student, and the circumstances surrounding the fatal injury remain under investigation.

The incident prompted an immediate response from campus officials, who worked with law enforcement to secure the surrounding area and ensure there was no continuing danger to students or employees.

Atlanta police described the incident as isolated and said investigators had found no evidence of an ongoing threat to the community.

Atlanta Technical College later confirmed that classes and normal campus operations had resumed.

“Our thoughts are with the students, their families, and the entire Atlanta Technical College community during this time,” a college spokesperson said.

The shooting also raised questions about firearms on college campuses in Georgia, where state law allows certain individuals to carry concealed handguns in designated areas of public colleges and universities.

Georgia’s campus carry law, which took effect in 2017, generally permits licensed individuals to carry concealed handguns in many campus buildings, including certain classrooms. However, restrictions remain in place for specific locations, and the law does not permit the careless or unlawful discharge of a weapon.

Authorities have not yet announced whether the firearm involved in Monday’s incident was being carried in compliance with applicable laws.

Atlanta Technical College, part of the Technical College System of Georgia, provides career training, technical certificates, diplomas and associate degrees to students seeking employment or additional education.

The college shares its southwest Atlanta campus with Atlanta Metropolitan State College, whose students and employees were also informed about the emergency response.

Officials said there was no known continuing threat to the neighboring college, although students were advised they might notice an increased police presence in the area.

Investigators are continuing to examine evidence and interview witnesses to establish exactly how the firearm discharged and what happened afterward.

As of Tuesday, October 20, police had not announced any additional findings or released further details about the individuals involved.

The tragedy has left the Atlanta Technical College community mourning the loss of a student while another recovers from injuries sustained during what began as an ordinary morning of classes.
