A 28-year-old bowling alley employee who was preparing for her wedding has died after being struck by a powerful pin-setting machine, with investigators now examining whether a potentially deadly injury was missed during her initial hospital treatment.
Melike Yeter was working at a bowling alley inside a children’s entertainment center in Çorum, Turkey, on October 21 when a malfunctioning machine turned an ordinary workday into a tragedy.
The young woman was reportedly attempting to fix a problem with the equipment that automatically collects and resets bowling pins when part of the mechanism suddenly struck her.
The impact left Yeter injured, prompting an emergency response from paramedics and police.
But it was what happened afterward that has raised some of the most troubling questions.
According to Turkish news reports, Yeter was taken to Hitit University Erol Olçok Training and Research Hospital, where she underwent an initial medical examination.
One account from the local newspaper Çorum Haber stated that doctors found no apparent serious problem and were preparing to discharge her after approximately two and a half hours of treatment.
However, as she was preparing to leave, Yeter reportedly began vomiting and her condition deteriorated.
Further examinations revealed something far more serious than initially suspected: a ruptured liver and internal bleeding.
She was transferred to intensive care, where doctors fought to save her life.
Despite their efforts, Yeter died from her injuries.
An autopsy later determined that internal bleeding caused by the liver injury was responsible for her death, according to Turkey’s Anadolu Agency.
The tragedy has become even more heartbreaking following reports that Yeter had gotten engaged just three months earlier and was preparing to marry.
Instead of celebrating the beginning of a new chapter, her loved ones were left planning her funeral.
As questions mounted about the circumstances of the accident, police arrested the 34-year-old owner of the entertainment center.
Local investigators alleged that Yeter had been directed to carry out maintenance duties that fell outside her normal job responsibilities.
Authorities also reportedly began examining allegations that she had been working without proper employment insurance.
The business owner, identified in local reports only by initials, was brought before a judge and ordered detained on suspicion of causing death through negligence.
The arrest does not establish criminal guilt, and the investigation into the owner’s responsibility remains ongoing.
Meanwhile, a separate inquiry has reportedly been opened into the emergency room doctors involved in Yeter’s treatment.
Investigators are examining whether her internal injuries should have been identified sooner and whether additional testing could have changed the outcome.
Early reporting has presented conflicting details about the hospital timeline. Some accounts say Yeter was discharged and later became seriously ill at home, while another local report says her condition deteriorated as she was preparing to leave the hospital.
That distinction has not yet been conclusively resolved.
The accident also raises significant workplace safety concerns.
Automatic bowling pinsetters contain powerful moving parts designed to sweep away fallen pins, lift bowling balls and reset equipment for the next frame.
Because these machines can move unexpectedly during operation, maintenance typically requires trained personnel and procedures to prevent the equipment from activating while someone is working near its mechanisms.
Investigators have not publicly determined whether such precautions were followed at the Çorum facility or what caused the machine to strike Yeter.
Following her death, family members and friends gathered to say goodbye at a funeral held at Akşemseddin Mosque.
She was laid to rest at Ulu Cemetery, as relatives mourned a young woman whose future had been filled with wedding plans and hopes for married life.
