A Halloween celebration with friends ended in tragedy when a woman in her 20s plunged to her death outside a popular Australian hotel after reportedly attempting to climb a drainpipe.

The horrifying incident unfolded around 4:10 a.m. Sunday, November 1, at the Rosemont Hotel in Adelaide, South Australia, as Halloween revelers were still enjoying a night out in the city’s bustling entertainment district.

According to local reports, the young woman had been celebrating with friends when she attempted to climb a drainpipe attached to the hotel near the intersection of Hindley and Morphett streets.

Witnesses reported hearing the pipe snap before the woman fell to the pavement below. Emergency services rushed to the scene, but despite desperate efforts by paramedics to save her, she was pronounced dead.

Josh Hughes, 27, was having a drink nearby when he heard the commotion and raced over to help. What he discovered left him shaken.

Hughes told The Advertiser that he approached the injured woman and placed his finger between her hands, desperately asking her to squeeze it if she could hear him.

When she failed to respond, he immediately called an ambulance.

“It was scary — I was scared,” Hughes recalled, admitting the traumatic scene made it difficult for him to sleep afterward.

“It wasn’t a happy Halloween,” he added.

The tragedy unfolded in one of Adelaide’s busiest nightlife districts, where crowds had gathered to celebrate the holiday. Police cordoned off the area as investigators examined the circumstances surrounding the fatal fall.

South Australia Police confirmed that the woman’s death was not being treated as suspicious. However, questions remain about exactly how the incident occurred and what caused the drainpipe to give way.

Investigators from SafeWork SA, the state’s workplace safety regulator, also attended the hotel and began making inquiries. Authorities are preparing a report for the state coroner, who will examine the circumstances surrounding her death.

The incident has prompted renewed concerns about safety along Hindley Street, a popular destination for bars, restaurants and late-night entertainment. South Australian Treasurer Tom Koutsantonis expressed condolences to the woman’s loved ones and said authorities would examine whether additional safety measures were needed.

Police believe bystanders may have captured footage of the fatal fall and are urging anyone with recordings to come forward. However, officers have made a special appeal for people not to circulate the footage online out of respect for the victim and her grieving family.

The woman’s identity has not been publicly released.

What began as a night of Halloween festivities ended in an unimaginable loss, leaving witnesses traumatized and a family mourning a young woman whose life was cut tragically short.
