On Monday morning, a gunman opened fire in a bank in Louisville, Kentucky, killing five people and injuring six others.

The mass shooting occurred just before 8:30 a.m. at the Old National Bank in the city’s downtown area, near Slugger Field, according to the Louisville Metro Police Department.

The mass shooter was killed in the ordeal, but the circumstances surrounding his death weren’t immediately known. A police officer was among those injured and rushed to University of Louisville Hospital in the wake of the mass shooting.

The conditions of those victims also weren’t known.

Witnesses told WHAS11 they saw a man with a “long assault rifle” fire several shots on the first floor of the bank building. “He just started firing,” one witness said. “I didn’t see his face. We were in the conference room. Whoever was next to me got shot, their blood’s on me.”

Responding officers opened fire on the gunman, according to witnesses.

Footage from the scene appeared to show one of the bank’s windows blown out with glass scattered on the ground.

The bank wasn’t open to the public when the shooting erupted. A driver, only identified as Debbie, told WDRB she had stopped at the traffic lights just outside the bank when she spotted a man who appeared to be injured lying on the entrance steps. Then she heard gunfire.

“I didn’t know if it was going at the bank or out of the bank, I took off,” she said. “When I turned, I saw that one of the windows in the bank had been blown out.”

She said multiple law enforcement vehicles immediately swarmed the scene. “They were coming from everywhere,” she said. “The police were coming out of their cars with black rifles.”

The motive behind the attack remains unclear, but the incident has left the city of Louisville shaken. Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear expressed his condolences to the families impacted by the shooting and urged people to pray for them and the city.

Mass shootings in the United States have become a prevalent issue in recent years, with numerous incidents reported across the country.

The frequency of these shootings has led to calls for stricter gun control laws, but the issue remains highly divisive in the country. As authorities investigate the Louisville shooting, the focus remains on the victims and their families who are now dealing with the aftermath of this tragedy.
