Migrants from Texas arrived at Vice President Kamala Harris’ residence in Washington, DC, on Thursday, just hours before the expiration of the Title 42 immigration policy.

The group, consisting of more than 30 migrants, including men, women, and children, mainly from Venezuela, was dropped off outside the US Naval Observatory, which serves as the vice president’s official residence, as reported by NBC News. This marked the second busload of migrants to arrive at the Naval Observatory within 24 hours, with the first vehicle transporting nearly 40 individuals.

Texas has been transporting migrants to Harris’ residence and other liberal areas since last year, aiming to highlight the challenges faced by border states due to the immigration crisis.

This effort serves to dispute the Biden administration’s claims of a secure border. Meanwhile, the District of Columbia’s Department of Human Services recently announced that its temporary lodging program had reached capacity, accommodating approximately 1,249 migrants from 370 families across three local hotels.

The buses arrived shortly before the expiration of Title 42, a pandemic-era immigration policy that allowed authorities to expel migrants rapidly without granting them an asylum hearing. President Biden acknowledged on Tuesday that the end of Title 42 would result in a chaotic situation at the US-Mexico border for a while.

As a result of the expected surge in border crossings, vetted migrants who cannot be processed promptly by overwhelmed border authorities will be permitted to enter the country. The Washington Post reported that some asylum seekers have already been allowed entry and have received immigration court dates scheduled more than a decade in the future.

In response to the anticipated influx, Florida Attorney General Ashley Moody filed a federal lawsuit on Thursday against the Biden administration, seeking to block the mass release of migrants into the US after the expiration of Title 42. Moody is seeking a temporary restraining order, arguing that Biden’s current parole policy mirrors a similar order that was recently struck down by a federal judge.

The arrival of migrants at the vice president’s residence and the imminent expiration of Title 42 underscore the ongoing challenges faced by the Biden administration in managing immigration and securing the border. The situation raises concerns about the capacity of border facilities, the processing of asylum claims, and the need for comprehensive immigration reform to address the complexities of the issue.
