A Minneapolis Democrat endorsing convention turned into a scene of turmoil and violence as supporters of an insurgent candidate stormed the stage at a local school, sparking a brawl. Shocking video footage captured the chaotic moments that unfolded at the Ella Baker Global Studies & Humanities Magnet School, where the convention was being held to endorse candidates for the Minnesota Democratic–Farmer–Labor Party.

The disturbance began with intense booing as team members for incumbent Ward 10 Councilmember Aisha Chughtai and her supporters took the stage in hopes of securing the party’s endorsement. Tensions quickly escalated when a woman from challenger Nasri Warsame’s team aggressively approached a Chughtai supporter, shouting and pointing. Other supporters from Warsame’s camp joined in, creating a chaotic scene beneath the stage.

The clash between the two camps spilled onto the stage itself, with the same Warsame supporter who initiated the altercation slamming a table that was meant for the endorsement proceedings. The convention chair, Sam Doten, intervened, expressing concern for the safety of everyone present and ultimately adjourning the convention.

Reports of injuries and fights emerged following the incident, but Minneapolis police declined to make any arrests. According to the Star Tribune, at least one person was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, while another was treated at the scene. Warsame claimed that two members of his team were sent to the hospital due to injuries sustained during the scuffle.

In response to the altercation, Chughtai released a formal statement placing blame on Warsame for inciting the incident. She accused his campaign of physically assaulting her volunteers, including punching multiple women of color, and harassing LGBTQIA2S+ delegates and supporters. The Democratic–Farmer–Labor Party also pointed fingers at Warsame’s supporters, holding them responsible for the disruptive and violent behavior.

Ken Martin, the chairman of the party, expressed his disapproval of the harassment and violence that transpired at the convention. He emphasized the expectation for candidates and their campaign teams to work towards curbing such behavior. Martin announced that the party would collaborate with Minneapolis authorities to determine the appropriate course of action in response to the incident.

The Minneapolis Democrat endorsing convention, meant to provide a platform for candidates to garner support, was marred by the shocking display of aggression and disorder. The aftermath of the brawl leaves both the Democratic–Farmer–Labor Party and local authorities grappling with how to address the incident and ensure the safety and integrity of future political events.
