The Biden administration is growing increasingly concerned about the impact of Robert F. Kennedy Jr., and their worries are not unfounded. As the proverbial boy shouting, “The emperor has no clothes,” Kennedy is making waves that cannot be ignored.
Currently polling at 20% in primary polls, RFK Jr.’s surge is not solely due to his famous last name. Even Marianne Williamson, an unconventional candidate, is polling at 8%. The real reason behind Kennedy’s appeal lies in President Biden’s astonishing weakness and abysmal record.
At the age of 80, Biden is displaying signs of serious decline, and his track record is nothing short of atrocious. This is not lost on voters, including Democrats, who are increasingly aware of his shortcomings.
According to a recent CNN-SRSS survey, only 60% of Democrats express support for the president. This is an alarmingly poor showing for a sitting president. Even more concerning, 42% of those supporters admit they might ultimately choose someone else. When combining RFK Jr.’s 20% support with those open to considering him, his numbers skyrocket to 64%.
It is worth noting that RFK Jr. holds some eccentric views, making his appeal even more surprising. He has long been a vaccine skeptic, suggesting that Big Pharma is somehow connected to the rise in mass shootings in the United States. He also urges viewing the Ukraine conflict from Russia’s perspective. Yet, just like Pat Buchanan in the 1992 GOP primary against President George H.W. Bush, Kennedy is exposing the weaknesses of the incumbent while simultaneously highlighting Biden’s potential downfall.
Gallup reports that only 18% of Americans, half the historical average, are satisfied with the country’s current conditions. CNN’s findings indicate that 41% of respondents believe Biden’s re-election would be a “disaster,” with an additional 26% calling it a “setback.” These sentiments stem from Biden’s gaffes, physical stumbles, record-breaking inflation, soaring gas prices, declining real wages, border crisis, botched withdrawal from Afghanistan, and the escalating racial, social, and political divisions plaguing the nation.
While Biden’s allies may attempt to discredit RFK Jr. by focusing on his more outlandish views, this will not deter the challenger from exposing Biden’s numerous failures. Many Democrats are ready to rally behind someone who promises to secure the border, regardless of what else he may say. In fact, it wouldn’t be surprising if tech titans like Jack Dorsey lend support to Kennedy’s wild conspiracy theories.
For now, Biden’s campaign will avoid engaging with the challenger, fearing that it may inadvertently elevate his status. The party establishment will also work to suppress any chances of open primary debates. However, no one can deny Kennedy’s greatest strength: he presents an alternative to a failed president who might not even make it to Election Day 2024.
In 2016, we urged Democrats to find an alternative to Hillary Clinton, who became the worst major-party presidential candidate in recent memory. Unfortunately, they didn’t listen, and the consequences were evident. Will they repeat the same mistake with Biden? Only time will tell.
