In a concerning turn of events, the Russian Orthodox Church has defrocked a priest who delivered a sermon calling for an end to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. Priest Ioann Burdin found himself convicted under wartime censorship laws for daring to speak out against the escalating clash, which has been wreaking havoc for nearly 16 months since its onset in February 2022.
According to reports, Burdin was forced to step down from his role as a parish priest, and he was slapped with a fine of 35,000 rubles ($360) as punishment for his sermon. In his address, he emphasized the commandment “Thou shalt not kill” and openly criticized Vladimir Putin’s war, holding both the Russian leader and all parties involved accountable for the bloodshed suffered by the Ukrainian people.
“We Christians cannot stand on the sidelines while brother kills brother,” the priest passionately declared. “The blood of Ukrainians is not only on the hands of leaders of the Russian Federation and the soldiers who carry out their order. Their blood is on the hands of each of us who approved this war or who stayed silent.”
This incident is not isolated, as several other Russian priests have faced backlash from Putin’s regime for daring to speak out against the war. In response to Burdin’s case, the ecclesiastical court has scheduled a hearing on June 16 to review the matter. The priest is currently accused of undermining believers’ trust in the patriarch and bishops and being damaging to the unity of the Church. Authorities within the Church labeled Burdin’s pacifist stance as “distinctly anti-Russian” and deemed it unacceptable.
It is worth noting that Patriarch Kirill, the leader of the Russian Orthodox Church, has been one of Putin’s most ardent supporters in the conflict. Kirill previously asserted that Ukraine is Russia’s “historical land” and urged the country to reclaim it by any means necessary. His statements further highlight the stark contrast between the official stance of the Church and the courageous dissent voiced by Priest Burdin.
The defrocking of Ioann Burdin for his sermon advocating peace and criticizing the war raises concerns about freedom of speech and religious expression within Russia. It underscores the heavy influence of the Russian government on religious institutions and their alignment with the political agenda. As the conflict in Ukraine persists, it remains to be seen how dissenting voices will continue to be treated and what impact this will have on the Russian Orthodox Church’s relationship with the state and its followers.

Guess this priest didn’t realize that religions love religion-fueled-wars!
Religics love to mass murder each other by the millions…
War in Ukraine is based around the 900 year old split in the Catholic Church with Roman Catholics in Europe and Eastern Orthodox Catholics in Russia… and Jews caught in the middle again…
RELIGIONS are evil foreign psychotic mass murderous mental illness and an ADDICTION to being LIED TO, an ENFORCED PSYCHOSIS, and, of course, written orders from their evil handbooks for their customers to automatically instantly HATE, HURT, and MASS MURDER everyone on the planet not of the exact same religion…
The Russian Orthodox Church is a Putin puppet …same as Trump.
I admire any religious figure that tries to promote one of the real basic tenet of Christianity, but the institutions are as corrupt as their leadership.
If the Truth would be told, the USA is the ones with Blood on their Hands. The Democrats are mostly to blame, but anyone and everyone that supports Ukraine and their Terrorist Leader, is at fought. Mitch McConnell and Lindsey Grahm, are GUILTY.
