Two firefighters were shot early on Wednesday morning at a fire station in Birmingham, Alabama, in a startling occurrence that has shocked the neighborhood and left everyone in a state of shock. Although Birmingham Fire Chief Cory Moon was unable to provide specifics regarding the status of the two firemen or the circumstances surrounding the shooting, he did confirm that they were both promptly taken to a hospital.
A thorough investigation is being conducted to ascertain the reason behind this terrible act, and authorities are currently on the lookout for a suspect who is thought to be operating a silver automobile. The gunshot at Station 9 happened just before 8:30 a.m., shocking the neighborhood and requiring a quick reaction from Birmingham police and the Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service.
The firefighters were shot in the legs and chest, according to eyewitness accounts. One caller described how they fled to the bathroom after hearing gunshots in a harrowing time. The shooter entered the fire station through an open bay door, which is generally kept open for locals seeking aid or information, such as getting their blood pressure checked. Birmingham Police Chief Scott Thurmond confirmed this.
This incident is especially concerning because it seems to have been a targeted strike. The deliberate targeting of firefighters who are committed to defending and rescuing residents deeply concerned Chief Thurmond. I hate to say that, but I think police would be the main targets, he said. Seeing our firefighters seriously injured is upsetting and demoralizing because they are there to guard, assist, and rescue our citizens.
A large number of law enforcement authorities, including Birmingham detectives, SWAT officers, and senior fire department commanders, were on the scene shortly after the incident. The two male firefighters were taken in critical condition and taken quickly to UAB Hospital. Fortunately, a different firefighter who was present inside the station during the incident escaped uninjured.
