Tafari Campbell, a former White House chef who had worked for the Obama family, was discovered dead in a pond on the south edge of the island, bringing tragedy to the Martha’s Vineyard community. The revelation was confirmed by Massachusetts police, who also disclosed that Campbell, 45, was on vacation in Martha’s Vineyard at the time of his death.
Campbell was reported missing after going paddleboarding on Sunday night, which is when the incident started to take place. Police reports state that he momentarily struggled to keep above the water before falling beneath it and not coming back to the surface. He was paddleboarding with another person who saw the upsetting event.
The Massachusetts Environmental Police started searching right away, and early on Monday morning, they discovered Campbell’s body in Edgartown Great Pond. The divers from the department’s underwater recovery squad successfully pulled his body from a depth of roughly 8 feet, about 100 feet offshore, after the police used side-scan sonar from a boat to locate him.
Having worked as a sous chef at the White House under former President Obama, Tafari Campbell has a distinguished career. He had a big impact on the Obama family and kept working for them even after the president’s eight-year term was over. In a joint statement to CNN, Barack and Michelle Obama both shared their sorrow and paid tribute to Campbell.
The Obamas stated that “Tafari was a beloved member of our family.” He was a skilled sous chef at the White House when we first met him; he was imaginative and passionate about food and its capacity to unite people. We grew to know him as a pleasant, jovial, incredibly kind person who made all of our lives a little bit brighter in the years that followed.
Campbell left a lasting impression on the former first couple, who recalled him with fondness. Because of this, we begged Tafari to join us as we left the White House, and he graciously accepted. Since then, he has been a vital part of our lives, and his passing has crushed our hearts, they added.
The State Police Detective Unit for the Cape and Islands District and Edgartown Police are both involved in the ongoing investigation into Campbell’s death. The District Attorney’s Office for the Cape and Islands has not yet made an official announcement.
Condolences are being sent to Campbell’s family, especially his wife, Sherise, and their twin boys, Xavier and Savin, as the neighborhood mourns the passing of a skilled chef and well-liked individual. In addition to his culinary prowess, Tafari Campbell will be remembered for the love and kindness he showed to everyone in his vicinity.
