Hillcrest High School in Queens became the epicenter of a disturbing incident this week when hundreds of students engaged in a nearly two-hour rampage through the school halls. The uproar was reportedly sparked by the revelation that a teacher had attended a pro-Israel rally, causing a pre-planned protest that turned into a chaotic scene of aggression and hostility.

The Unraveling of Events: The turmoil unfolded around 11 a.m. on Monday, initiated by students who discovered a teacher’s Facebook profile photo showing her participation in a pro-Israel rally on October 9. The photo displayed her holding a sign that read, “I stand with Israel.” Outraged students organized a group chat, exposing the teacher and discussing plans for a riot.

Mayhem in the Halls: As the protest gained momentum, hundreds of students flooded the hallways, chanting, jumping, shouting, and waving Palestinian flags or banners. Their target was the teacher’s classroom, and despite school staff attempting to block their entry, many students attempted to force their way in. The atmosphere was charged with slogans like “Free Palestine!” and demands for the teacher’s dismissal.

Police Response and Investigation: The NYPD was called to restore order, deploying dozens of officers to the school. Additionally, the counterterrorism bureau is reportedly investigating a possible threat against the school. City Councilman James Gennaro emphasized the seriousness of the situation, stating that the counterterrorism task force’s involvement indicates the potential gravity of the incident.

Social Media Amplification: Students recorded the chaos, sharing videos on TikTok with captions that showcased the unrest. Some videos featured Arabian music, while others captured vandalism within the school premises, including a ripped-out water fountain and shattered tiles in a boys’ restroom.

Teacher’s Safety Concerns: The targeted teacher was rushed into an office and the door was locked, ensuring her safety during the tumultuous events. However, the hostility extended beyond the school walls, with students reportedly following and spitting on her. Additionally, there were claims of the teacher’s personal information, including her address and phone number, being exposed online.

Reactions from Officials and Community: The incident has raised concerns about the rise of antisemitism in New York schools, with City Councilman Robert Holden expressing shock at the students’ behavior. Councilman Gennaro attributed the incident to the ongoing Israel-Gaza conflict, suggesting it provided students with a “convenient excuse” to act out.
