The NCAA Tournament’s first-round clash between Chattanooga and N.C. State on Saturday garnered attention not just for the on-court action but for an unexpected mid-game alteration in officiating personnel. Tommi Paris, initially designated as one of the game’s officials, was replaced at halftime by Angelica Suffren due to a background conflict, according to statements from the NCAA.

The decision to swap officials midway through the game came to light after an inquiry from The Associated Press. The NCAA clarified that Paris had a background conflict that, if known beforehand, would have precluded her from officiating the assigned game. While the nature of this conflict was not disclosed, it prompted the NCAA to make a swift adjustment to maintain the integrity of the officiating crew.

Chattanooga coach Shawn Poppie recounted the moment he was informed of the change, stating, “They literally just got me in the locker room and said they were making a change.” Poppie expressed uncertainty regarding the specifics of the situation, noting that it was only the second time in his career he had witnessed such a mid-game alteration in officiating.

Angelica Suffren, who had officiated the earlier Green Bay-Tennessee game, stepped in for the second half of the Chattanooga-N.C. State matchup. The NCAA explained that Suffren’s inclusion was aimed at ensuring the game had a full officiating crew and standby personnel, thereby maintaining consistency and fairness on the court.

Despite the unexpected switch, N.C. State emerged victorious with a 64-45 win over Chattanooga. However, Suffren’s involvement in the game garnered attention when she assessed a fourth-quarter technical foul on Poppie with the Mocs trailing 50-28.

Poppie’s response to the mid-game officiating adjustment reflected a mix of understanding and curiosity. He noted, “I thought that’s what standby was for. But I’m new to this thing, too. We’re all learning. So I’m not exactly sure what happened.”

The incident serves as a reminder of the meticulous protocols and considerations involved in officiating high-stakes collegiate basketball games. With the NCAA Tournament representing the pinnacle of college basketball competition, ensuring the integrity of the officiating process remains paramount, even if it necessitates mid-game adjustments to address unforeseen conflicts or issues.
