Senator Ted Cruz has never been one to mince words, but this time, his fire was directed squarely at Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. And honestly, can you blame him? Zelensky, who has been playing the role of international hero, decided it was a good idea to dip his toes into U.S. politics—just weeks before one of the most critical elections in recent history. Cruz, like many Americans, saw it for what it was: blatant interference.
Appearing on his podcast, Verdict, Cruz didn’t hold back, ripping into Zelensky for attending an event in Pennsylvania—of all places—with a trio of Democrats: Governor Josh Shapiro, Senator Bob Casey, and Congressman Matt Cartwright. Pennsylvania, folks! A swing state that could decide the election, and there’s Zelensky, acting like he’s on some goodwill tour, cozying up with Democrats and throwing potshots at Republican figures like JD Vance.
“Who the hell is Zelensky to be trying to interfere in our election?” Cruz asked, perfectly encapsulating what millions of Americans were thinking. It’s a fair question. Since when do we let foreign leaders, even ones we’ve been throwing billions of taxpayer dollars at, wade into our domestic elections? Cruz didn’t stop there. He went after Zelensky’s intelligence—yes, his intelligence—saying, “The guy is an absolute moron for coming to the U.S. six weeks before the election and attacking Trump and Vance.”
It’s hard to argue with Cruz’s logic here. If Zelensky had any political savvy whatsoever, he would’ve kept his mouth shut about U.S. politics and stayed above the fray. Instead, he decides to cozy up to Democrats and take jabs at Republicans, practically begging for backlash. As Cruz pointed out, all Zelensky had to do was say, “I’m not going to comment on U.S. elections. That’s for the American people to decide.” Boom. Done. But no, instead, Zelensky decided to make himself a campaign prop for Kamala Harris and her ilk. And Cruz? He’s furious, and rightfully so.
Now, here’s the kicker. Zelensky just made his own life a lot harder, and Cruz laid it out perfectly. “If Trump wins, he’s got a huge problem that just got bigger,” Cruz said, pointing out the obvious consequences of Zelensky’s partisan antics. And let’s not forget that Trump isn’t exactly Zelensky’s biggest fan to begin with.
But it gets worse for Zelensky. Even if Trump loses, Republicans aren’t going to forget this little stunt. Cruz made it clear: “Good luck trying to get Republicans to listen to what he has to say if he just behaves like a Democrat campaign activist.” Zelensky might think he’s making friends in the Democratic camp, but he’s burning bridges with half of Washington, and that’s going to hurt his country down the road.
What’s most alarming about this whole mess is the sheer recklessness of it all. As Cruz pointed out, “This is just dumb on his part.” And it is. Zelensky is walking into a U.S. election with both feet, and the fallout could be catastrophic for Ukraine, a country that, let’s face it, depends heavily on U.S. support—support that increasingly comes from Republicans who are less and less thrilled about writing blank checks for a war that seems to have no end in sight.
Cruz didn’t mince words about the gravity of Zelensky’s mistake, calling it “one of the greatest unforced errors” he’s ever seen from a foreign leader. And he’s right. When has a foreign leader, especially one whose country is reliant on U.S. military aid, ever so blatantly involved themselves in an American election? It’s unprecedented, it’s foolish, and it could have serious repercussions for Ukraine.
This wasn’t just a bad move—it was a spectacular miscalculation. Zelensky could’ve taken the high road. He could’ve stayed out of U.S. politics and maintained a neutral stance. But no, he decided to jump into the fray, and now he’s going to have to live with the consequences.
What happens next is anyone’s guess, but one thing is clear: Zelensky just made his own battle for continued U.S. support a lot harder. And Ted Cruz? Well, he’s not going to let anyone forget it.
