Meghan Markle’s latest business venture is off to a rocky start, and for once, she’s admitting it.
In a rare moment of self-reflection, the Duchess of Sussex, 43, confessed that the launch of her lifestyle brand, As Ever, has been riddled with missteps and setbacks. Speaking to People magazine, Markle acknowledged the hurdles, stating, “I appreciate everyone who gave me the grace to make mistakes and figure it out, and also to be forgiving with myself through that. It’s a learning curve.”
But critics argue that Markle’s “learning curve” has been more of a PR disaster. The former actress, known for carefully curating her image, initially announced her brand as American Riviera Orchard in March 2024. However, the name quickly ran into legal trouble when the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) rejected it for violating trademark laws prohibiting geographical locations from being copyrighted.
Observers say the issue was entirely predictable. “Anyone with basic business knowledge would have foreseen this problem,” said a brand strategist familiar with trademark law. “It’s amateur hour at best.”
A Name Change and More Controversy
After months of scrambling, Markle rebranded her business to As Ever in February 2025, but the switch only sparked more controversy. A clothing brand in New York bearing the same name voiced concerns, and a small town in Mallorca, Spain, accused Markle of appropriating its historic coat of arms for her logo.
Despite the backlash, Markle remains resolute. “There are tons of twists and turns — even with the name,” she told People. “I was figuring it out in real time.”
Critics see this as yet another example of Markle’s pattern—grand ambitions with little foresight. “She rushes into things without thinking them through, then plays the victim when they don’t go her way,” said a former royal insider. “This business launch is just another chapter in the same story.”
Strategic Branding or Image Rehabilitation?
Markle’s website features a prominent photo of her with her daughter, Princess Lilibet, 3, a move some view as a deliberate attempt to soften her image. “Being able to have my own little girl, as I’ve spent so much of my life championing the rights of girls and women… this is something I can create in front of my daughter and teach her what it’s like to be a working mom,” she explained.
But skeptics question the authenticity of her messaging. “It’s always about crafting a narrative,” said a royal commentator. “She’s selling an image more than a product.”
Meanwhile, the actual business details remain murky. As Ever is expected to sell high-end lifestyle products, including a signature jam—an odd choice for someone trying to establish a powerhouse brand. The launch date is still unconfirmed, though speculation suggests it will coincide with her upcoming Netflix series, With Love, Meghan, debuting Tuesday.
“She’s always tying personal projects to media ventures. It’s about staying relevant,” noted an industry expert. “The products are secondary to the Markle brand.”
An ‘Entrepreneur,’ Not an ‘Influencer’?
Despite operating in a space dominated by social media-driven branding, Markle insists she doesn’t see herself as an influencer. “I see myself as an entrepreneur and a female founder,” she stated. “If the brand ends up influential, then that’s great.”
For critics, this is yet another Markle contradiction. “She built her entire post-royal career on being an influencer—whether it’s through Netflix, Spotify, or staged humanitarian work,” one commentator observed. “Now she wants credibility as a serious businesswoman? The public isn’t buying it.”
As Markle navigates her latest reinvention, one thing remains clear: The twists and turns are far from over.
