A dream family vacation in Italy turned into an unimaginable tragedy when a 36-year-old American woman reportedly stepped off a mountain trail to capture a scenic photograph and plunged nearly 1,000 feet to her death.
Michelle Alejandra Rubio Leiva, a Miami resident, was hiking with relatives in Italy’s breathtaking Dolomites on Saturday, October 17, when she lost her footing near Forcella Pordoi, a popular mountain destination known for its spectacular views and steep cliffs.
According to Italian media reports, Rubio Leiva had ventured away from the marked trail toward a panoramic viewpoint when she slipped and fell down the mountainside. Her horrified relatives, including her sister, reportedly witnessed the accident.
The tragedy unfolded at an elevation of approximately 9,000 feet, in an area where narrow paths and exposed rocky slopes can make even a minor misstep dangerous.
Witnesses immediately called Italy’s emergency number shortly before noon, prompting a frantic response from mountain rescue teams and an emergency helicopter.
A rescuer already nearby rushed to the area and provided the helicopter crew with precise coordinates. Medical personnel reached Rubio Leiva around 12:30 p.m., but her injuries were fatal, and she was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Trentino Alpine and Speleological Rescue Service estimated that she had fallen approximately 300 meters, or 984 feet, although one local report placed the distance closer to 200 meters.
Rescuers subsequently airlifted her devastated relatives to the nearby town of Canazei before recovering her body. The emergency operation concluded around 2:30 p.m.
Rubio Leiva, who worked in communications and marketing, had reportedly been enjoying a family getaway in northern Italy. According to local reporting, the group had planned to visit Rifugio Maria, a mountain refuge famous for its sweeping views of the surrounding peaks.
Instead, the outing ended in tragedy just a short distance from the area’s cable car station.
The accident has highlighted the dangers of leaving established mountain paths in pursuit of spectacular photographs. Although the Dolomites attract visitors from around the world, their rugged terrain, loose gravel and steep drop-offs can pose serious risks, even near popular tourist attractions.
Researchers have previously identified falls from heights as a leading cause of deaths associated with taking photographs and selfies at dangerous locations.
Authorities have not announced any evidence of foul play, and the exact circumstances of Rubio Leiva’s fatal slip remain unclear.
