“There were mistakes made, and that shouldn’t have happened.” – President Donald Trump

One year after bullets tore through a Pennsylvania campaign rally stage, nearly killing President Donald Trump, a scathing new federal report reveals how dangerously close America came to losing its 45th — and now 47th — president.

In what is being called one of the most damning national security failures in modern history, the Government Accountability Office (GAO) has released a detailed, blistering review of the U.S. Secret Service’s performance during the July 13, 2024 assassination attempt in Butler, Pennsylvania.

The report lays out a disturbing picture of bureaucratic incompetence, ignored warnings, and near-fatal mistakes that let a 20-year-old gunman get within shooting distance of Trump—despite federal intelligence warning of a threat 10 days before the rally.

“The shooting was preventable,” the report declares flatly.

According to the GAO, top Secret Service officials were briefed on a classified threat to Trump’s life more than a week ahead of the Butler rally—but that information was never passed down to the agents on the ground or to local law enforcement.

Local police told investigators they would have boosted security efforts had they known. Instead, vital surveillance and countermeasure requests were either denied or botched, and event planning was left in the hands of a rookie agent managing her first major outdoor event.

In a fateful move, the Secret Service refused a request from Trump’s security detail for enhanced counter-drone equipment, citing resource limits due to preparations for the Republican and Democratic national conventions.

“Had senior officials not overruled that denial at the last moment,” the report says, “Trump would likely not have had the counter sniper coverage that stopped the shooter.”

President Trump was grazed by a bullet to the right ear while rallying supporters in Butler. Bleeding and stunned, he famously stood back up, raised his fist, and shouted, “Fight, fight, fight!” — a moment instantly burned into the national consciousness.

One supporter, Cory Comperatore, was killed shielding his family. Two others were wounded. The shooter, Thomas Crooks, perched on a nearby rooftop, was neutralized by Secret Service snipers.

The fallout has been seismic.

Six Secret Service agents were suspended without pay earlier this year for their roles in the failures. Director Kimberly Cheatle resigned under pressure just days after the shooting.

Congressional investigations from both chambers have now confirmed the obvious: “Significant failures in planning, execution, and leadership” nearly cost Trump his life.

Senator Chuck Grassley didn’t hold back: “A series of bad decisions and bureaucratic handicaps led to one of the most shocking moments in political history.”

Senator Ron Johnson has since issued subpoenas for internal FBI and DOJ documents relating to the failed assassination plot, raising new questions about the Biden administration’s role in rejecting enhanced security.

In a candid interview with his daughter-in-law Lara Trump, the president reflected on the moment that could’ve ended everything:

“There were mistakes made, and that shouldn’t have happened,” he said.

The GAO report concludes with 37 actionable recommendations for overhauling the Secret Service, including policy reforms, structural changes, and new protocols for high-risk events.

But critics fear that without real accountability at the top, the agency may simply repeat the same deadly mistakes.

“We got lucky,” one congressional aide said. “Next time, we might not.”

With the 2028 election cycle on the horizon and Trump’s popularity undiminished, the Butler incident remains a terrifying reminder of how one missed warning can almost alter the course of American history.

And the question still lingers: Why wasn’t President Trump better protected that day?
