A Michigan woman’s nerve-wracking drive through a flooded tunnel near Detroit Metro Airport has gone viral after she captured the entire ordeal on video — complete with crashing water, floating debris, and a prayer on her lips.
On Monday, July 28, Karen Humphrey found herself leaving the Delta terminal at DTW when she came face-to-face with a nearly submerged tunnel along Dingell Drive. Torrential storms had swamped the area, and what she saw looked more like a river than a road. Instead of turning back, Humphrey turned on her camera and drove forward — cautiously and with fear in her voice.
In the jaw-dropping footage, a passenger can be heard describing what looked like a “waterfall” spilling down the concrete walls into the tunnel. The water quickly rose as the vehicle pushed forward, at times sloshing up over the hood.

“Dear God, please let me make it through,” Humphrey is heard saying repeatedly as her companion encouraged her to go slow. The two gasped mid-drive as floating traffic cones and other debris drifted toward their car. At one point, the water was so high it nearly reached the passenger side window.
Somehow, they made it out — shaken but safe. Despite the flooded streets still surrounding the tunnel, their car miraculously kept running.
Officials at Detroit Metro Airport later confirmed the tunnel was one of several spots hit hard by flash flooding during the storm. The flooding also disrupted flights and snarled traffic throughout the airport grounds. Hours later, airport officials announced that waters had finally receded and roads had reopened.
The dramatic video has since spread across social media, showing just how dangerous — and unpredictable — extreme weather can be. And for Karen Humphrey, it’s a drive she’ll never forget.
