New York City was rocked Monday night when a gunman armed with an M4 assault rifle stormed a Midtown Manhattan office tower, killing four people—including a decorated NYPD officer—before turning the weapon on himself.
The rampage brought a wave of terror to the heart of America’s financial capital, even as President Trump vowed that “law and order will prevail.”
Just before 6:30 p.m., chaos erupted in a building at Park Avenue and East 52nd Street—home to global financial heavyweights and the consulate general of Ireland. Police say the shooter, 39-year-old Shane Devon Tamura from Nevada, pulled up in a black BMW, stepped out with a military-style rifle, and opened fire. Officer Didarul Islam, a 36-year-old Bronx cop and immigrant from Bangladesh, was the first to fall.
“He was saving lives. He was protecting New Yorkers,” said Mayor Eric Adams. “He’s a hero. He’s everything this city stands for.”
According to Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch, Tamura blasted through the lobby, sprayed bullets, and made his way up to the 33rd floor. There, he targeted the offices of Rudin Management, gunning down another man and two women. One woman riding the elevator was reportedly spared—eyewitnesses say Tamura motioned for her to leave before he turned the gun on himself.
As sirens wailed and helicopters circled, NYPD, Homeland Security, and FBI agents flooded the scene. Office workers streamed out with hands raised, many in tears. The building went into full lockdown as elite tactical units cleared every floor.
“It was a war zone,” said Maria Gonzalez, who works in a nearby building. “We heard the shots, then everyone was running, screaming. I saw the cops running in. You never think this will happen here.”
Commissioner Tisch later confirmed: “The scene has been contained and the lone shooter has been neutralized.”
Killed in the attack were Officer Islam, another male victim, and two women—one found on the 33rd floor. The names of the civilian victims have not yet been released, pending notification of families.
Islam, a 3½-year NYPD veteran, was remembered by colleagues as brave, dedicated, and deeply proud of his adopted country. “He came here for the American dream,” said fellow officer Mark Collins. “He died a hero.”
Within an hour, President Trump addressed the nation from the White House, calling the shooting a “vicious assault on our city and our values.”
“We will not allow cowards to terrorize Americans or threaten our police,” Trump declared. “We will deliver swift justice. My prayers are with the families of the victims and our brave NYPD.”
The president also called for an immediate review of security at high-profile office buildings nationwide.
Governor Kathy Hochul urged New Yorkers to avoid the area and praised first responders. “We’re heartbroken but resolute,” she said. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries demanded “decisive action” on gun laws, saying, “Mass shootings are a plague.”
Attorney General Pam Bondi and FBI Deputy Director Dan Bongino confirmed federal agents are “actively assisting” and that a command post is now in place.
With the city still on edge, investigators are combing through security footage, searching for Tamura’s motive, and questioning dozens of witnesses. Officials say Tamura, who had a concealed-carry permit from Nevada, was unknown to New York authorities. The attack raises new questions about how out-of-state gunmen can breach security in some of the country’s most fortified spaces.
As America grapples with another mass shooting, the spotlight once again falls on gun violence, mental health, and the thin blue line that stands between chaos and order.
