New Dinosaur Causes Radical Rethink of Evolution

Scientists have unearthed a prehistoric creature so bizarre, it’s forcing them to rewrite what they thought they knew about dinosaur evolution.

The newly discovered species, called Spicomellus afer, roamed the Earth around 165 million years ago — during the Jurassic period — and sported metre-long spikes jutting straight out from its neck. Its wild, spiky appearance has already earned it a nickname: the “punk rock dinosaur.”

“This is one of the strangest dinosaurs ever discovered,” said Professor Richard Butler of the University of Birmingham, who co-led the research. “It’s the punk rocker of its time — bristling with spikes like a prehistoric hedgehog.”

The fossils were discovered in Boulemane, a small Moroccan town, making this the first ankylosaur ever found in Africa. Ankylosaurs are a group of heavily armored dinosaurs that survived until the Cretaceous period, which ended about 66 million years ago when an asteroid wiped out most life on Earth.

Until now, scientists believed early ankylosaurs evolved with simple body armor to defend against massive predators like Tyrannosaurus rex. But Spicomellus afer’s spiky, almost weaponized appearance has flipped that theory on its head.

“If you had asked me what the earliest known ankylosaur looked like, I would have said something small, low to the ground, and protected by simple plates,” Butler told BBC News. “Instead, we have an animal bristling with spikes — the most bizarre armor we’ve ever seen in any animal, living or extinct.”

Professor Susannah Maidment of the Natural History Museum, who co-led the project, was equally stunned.

“What’s shocking is that these spikes were fused directly onto the bones,” she explained. “We’ve never seen anything like this in any living or extinct animal.”

Maidment believes the dinosaur’s flamboyant armor might have served more than just defense.

“We’re speculating that these structures may have been used for display, like a prehistoric peacock,” she said. “Only later, during the Cretaceous, when predators grew gigantic jaws and crushing bites, would these elaborate displays be repurposed for survival.”

The discovery is already rewriting scientific understanding of dinosaur evolution.

“What we’re looking at could force us to rethink the entire timeline of ankylosaur development,” said Dr. Driss Ouarhache from Université Sidi Mohamed Ben Abdellah in Morocco, who helped lead the dig. “We’ve never seen dinosaurs like this before, and Morocco is turning out to be a treasure trove for paleontology.”

The researchers estimate the dinosaur was about 13 feet long, three feet high, and weighed nearly two tons. Though only partial fossils were recovered, scientists believe its tail may have sported a club-like weapon, giving it both an intimidating appearance and deadly defenses.

The fossils were first spotted by a local Moroccan farmer, who alerted scientists to the unusual rock formation. For Butler, the first sight of the specimen was unforgettable.

“It was a jaw-dropping, spine-tingling moment — maybe the most exciting of my career,” he recalled. “We instantly knew we had something extraordinary.”

The findings were published this week in the journal Nature, with researchers promising there’s still more to uncover.

“Every time we dig, this region gives up another secret,” said Ouarhache. “Who knows what else is hiding beneath the sand?”
