Beijing’s military parade honoring the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II took an unexpected twist when Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese leader Xi Jinping were caught on a hot mic discussing organ transplants, anti-aging science — and even human immortality.
But one top U.S. medical expert isn’t buying it.
“It’s science fiction, not science,” said Dr. James Markmann, president of the American Society of Transplant Surgeons. “Organ transplants save lives, but they do not make anyone immortal. There’s no credible evidence suggesting humans could live to 150 by swapping out organs.”
The private exchange, captured by Reuters, unfolded as Putin and Xi walked alongside North Korean leader Kim Jong Un through Tiananmen Square. The three men were attending a massive military parade, surrounded by world leaders including Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.
Putin’s interpreter was overheard saying in Chinese: “Biotechnology is continuously developing. Human organs can be continuously transplanted. The longer you live, the younger you become, and [you can] even achieve immortality.”
Xi responded: “Some predict that in this century humans may live to 150 years old.”
Their remarks immediately triggered a wave of speculation about just how deeply both nations are investing in cutting-edge longevity research.
Putin’s fascination with anti-aging technology isn’t new. In 2024, he ordered the creation of a state-backed institute called New Health Preservation Technologies, which focuses on cellular rejuvenation, neurotechnology, and organ regeneration.
His eldest daughter, endocrinologist Maria Vorontsova, has reportedly received millions in government funding for projects tied to cell renewal and genetics.
“Russia is betting heavily on biotechnology,” explained Dr. Elena Kozlova, a Moscow-based medical researcher. “It’s about soft power, prestige, and potentially creating medical solutions the West doesn’t yet have.”
Xi’s government has also poured billions into biotechnology, making it a core pillar of China’s economic and military strategy. Beijing has funded state-run labs exploring everything from CRISPR-based genetic editing to organ cloning technologies.
“China wants to lead the next century in both science and security,” said Dr. Li Zhong, a biotech policy analyst based in Shanghai. “Extending human life isn’t just a medical issue — it’s a geopolitical one.”
President Donald Trump weighed in Wednesday night, accusing Xi, Putin, and Kim of “plotting against the United States” behind closed doors.
“They’re up to something — something big,” Trump said at a rally in Arizona. “First, they build weapons together. Now they want to live forever. I’ve got news for them — America isn’t going anywhere.”
Despite the sensational remarks, American medical leaders insist the science isn’t there yet.
“There are over 100,000 people in the U.S. waiting for lifesaving organ transplants right now,” Dr. Markmann emphasized. “Instead of chasing immortality fantasies, we should focus on equitable access to organs and improving outcomes today.”
Still, the hot mic exchange highlights how advances in biotechnology, organ cloning, and anti-aging research are increasingly colliding with global politics — and how secretive state projects in Russia and China are sparking unease in Washington.
“Whether or not immortality is possible, the race to control human longevity has already begun,” warned Dr. Kozlova.
