A viral moment from a Coldplay concert that sparked a whirlwind of gossip, firings, and internet fury is now being recast as a major misunderstanding, according to a source close to one of the people involved.

Back in July, two senior executives from a tech firm called Astronomer were caught on the venue’s kiss cam at a Coldplay show in Massachusetts. But what looked like a romantic embrace between CEO Andy Byron, 51, and his human resources chief Kristin Cabot, 53, quickly became a public spectacle—especially since both were married to other people at the time.

As the couple sheepishly ducked out of view on the big screen, Coldplay’s frontman Chris Martin even chimed in, joking, “Uh oh, what? Either they’re having an affair, or they’re just very shy.”

That off-the-cuff comment would fuel a digital firestorm.

The video spread quickly online, and with it came accusations of infidelity, leading Astronomer to place both executives on leave. In a corporate statement, the company emphasized it holds leaders to a high standard and takes its values seriously. Both Byron and Cabot resigned shortly after.

But according to a new report in People magazine, the truth may not be as scandalous as it first appeared.

“There was no affair,” a source close to Cabot told the magazine. “Kristin and Andy had an excellent working relationship, a great friendship. Hugging your boss at a concert was inappropriate, and she knows that—but she didn’t break up anyone’s marriage.”

In fact, Kristin’s now-ex-husband, Andrew Cabot, confirmed the couple was already in the midst of a divorce when the July 13 Coldplay concert happened.

Though Byron was still technically married at the time, the insider insisted Cabot had nothing to do with the unraveling of his relationship.

Still, the fallout has been devastating. Cabot reportedly received hundreds of death threats in the days following the incident.

“In the first three days alone, she got about 900 threats on her phone,” the source said. “It’s been hard for her to leave the house. This has affected not just two individuals, but their entire families.”

Kristin Cabot was only recently brought on at Astronomer as Chief People Officer when the incident occurred, with Byron publicly praising her hire last fall. Both now face uncertain career prospects, their reputations overshadowed by a 15-second moment on a jumbotron.

As the insider summed up: “The scandal, the downfall, the job loss—none of that was deserved. These are real people with real families who got caught up in a media feeding frenzy.”

While the internet loves a juicy story, this one might be less of a love affair and more of a cautionary tale about workplace boundaries—and the viral power of a Coldplay kiss cam.
