A tragic fire in Houston has claimed the lives of two children, leaving the city mourning. The Houston Fire Department said the blaze broke out around 11 p.m. Wednesday at a townhome on Casa Grande Drive in the Greenspoint area.
“It’s a very sad day for the department,” HFD Chief Thomas Muñoz said.
The two children were at home with their mother and grandfather when the fire started. Both the mother and grandfather were hospitalized Wednesday night after suffering injuries while trying to escape the flames.
Chief Muñoz described the grandfather’s brave attempt to save the children. “We understand the grandfather made a valid effort to try and save the kids,” he said. “He wasn’t able to get all the way in.” The grandfather sustained severe burns in the effort.
The ages of the children have not been released, and authorities are still investigating what caused the fire.
“It’s a hard time for the city,” Muñoz said. “We ask Houstonians to keep the families in your prayers.”
The incident has left the community in shock as neighbors and first responders process the heartbreaking loss.
