Two construction workers were killed Friday when a crane suddenly collapsed at a redevelopment site in Everett, Massachusetts, just north of Boston.

Authorities said the crew was working near the Mystic River, close to Boston Harbor, when the crane came crashing down around midday. According to reports, one worker was struck and trapped beneath the wreckage, while another was fatally injured nearby. Police confirmed that one man died at the scene and the other later at the hospital.

Everett Mayor Carlo DeMaria described the victims as “young men” who had been dismantling an old fuel terminal once owned by ExxonMobil. The site is part of a redevelopment project led by Everett Landco, which recently began taking down large storage tanks and office structures to make way for new development. “May they rest in eternal peace,” the mayor said in a statement.

The Everett Police Department confirmed that the investigation remains active and is being handled by local police, the Massachusetts State Police, and the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.

Charter, one of the companies involved in the project, released a statement expressing heartbreak over the loss of life. “We are devastated to learn that two individuals from a subcontractor have died following a horrific accident at one of our job sites,” said CEO Robert Delhome. “We extend our deepest sympathies to the victims’ families and thank first responders for their swift action.”

The Everett Fire Department also commended emergency crews for their efforts in what it called a “complex technical rescue.”

The cause of the collapse has not yet been determined, and the investigation is ongoing.
