A woman in southwest England has died after being trampled by a herd of cows while out walking her dog in Exmoor earlier this month, authorities said.

Rebecca Jane Hitchings, 59, suffered severe injuries during the attack and was airlifted to Derriford Hospital in Plymouth. Despite medical efforts, she died from blunt trauma on Thursday, October 16. Coroner Philip Spinney confirmed that the cause of death was hemorrhagic shock, a type of hypovolemic shock that occurs when the body begins to shut down due to significant blood loss.

The tragic incident has prompted an inquest in Devon, which has since been adjourned and will later be transferred to a different coroner for a full hearing, according to the BBC.

Hitchings, a retired nurse originally from Exeter, was living in the village of Woodcombe at the time of her death. Details surrounding the circumstances of the attack remain unclear, including what happened to her dog after the incident.
