A Norwegian Cruise Line ship made an unexpected detour this week after spotting dozens of people stranded in the Ionian Sea. On October 22, the Norwegian Epic paused its voyage southwest of the Greek island of Zakynthos to carry out a dramatic rescue that saved 63 lives.
It’s still unclear who the rescued individuals were or how they came to be stranded, but Norwegian Cruise Line confirmed that all 63 people were safely brought onboard and cared for by the ship’s crew.
“The individuals were brought on board and tended to by the ship’s crew who provided a medical evaluation, food, and other items for their comfort,” a company spokesperson told USA Today. “Following a mandatory directive from the Rescue Coordination Centre, the ship proceeded to Kalamata, Greece, where the rescued individuals were turned over to Greek authorities. We appreciate our guests’ patience and understanding during this unexpected interruption to their journey.”
According to reports, the Norwegian Epic had originally departed from Italy and was scheduled to visit Greece, Malta, Italy, and France before the rescue altered its course. After assisting in the operation, the ship returned to its planned itinerary.
The rescue took place in the Ionian Sea, a beautiful but vast stretch of the Mediterranean known for both its deep blue waters and the challenging conditions small boats can face.
What began as an ordinary cruise turned into an unforgettable voyage of compassion and quick action — one that likely saved dozens of lives.
