A 17-year-old rising cricket star has tragically died after being struck in the head by a criket ball during a pre-match training session in Melbourne, Australia.
Ben Austin was practicing at Wally Tew Reserve in Ferntree Gully on Tuesday afternoon when the accident happened. He was rushed to the hospital in critical condition and placed on life support, but sadly passed away the next day, his club confirmed.
“Ferntree Gully Cricket Club wishes to advise of the tragic passing of our player, Ben Austin,” the club wrote in a heartfelt statement. “We are absolutely devastated by the passing of Ben, and the impact of his death will be felt by all in our cricket community.”
Ben’s parents, Jace and Tracey, expressed their gratitude to the first responders, hospital staff, and everyone who came to their son’s aid. “This tragedy has taken Ben from us, but we find comfort knowing he was doing something he loved — heading to the nets with his mates to play cricket,” his father said.
He added that their thoughts were also with Ben’s teammate who was bowling at the time of the accident. “This has impacted two young men, and our hearts go out to him and his family as well.”
Ben was remembered as a gifted and dedicated athlete who played cricket at the representative level and football for the Waverley Park Hawks Junior Football Club, where he appeared in more than 100 games.
“Ben was a kind, respectful, and much-loved player,” the Hawks said in a statement. “He was a true Hawks man — universally loved by his teammates, coaches, and parents. Our community has lost a wonderful young person who was becoming an outstanding young adult.”
The Ferntree Gully and District Cricket Association also paid tribute, calling Ben “an enormous loss to our local community.”
It’s believed Ben was facing an automatic bowling machine in the nets ahead of a senior T20 match when he was struck in the head and neck area, despite wearing a helmet. Witnesses said players and bystanders rushed to help as paramedics arrived within minutes.
Ben’s death has shaken the local sporting community, with tributes pouring in from teammates, coaches, and friends who say they will remember his bright smile, sportsmanship, and love for the game.
