A Florida police officer has tragically died following a motorcycle crash while on duty.
Miami Beach Police Department motorman David Cajuso was involved in the fatal accident on Tuesday, October 28, the department confirmed. The crash occurred along the northbound lanes of Interstate 75 near NW 138 Street, according to MBPD.
Authorities said Cajuso lost control of his motorcycle and went down a steep embankment. He was airlifted to Jackson Memorial Hospital’s Ryder Trauma Center in critical condition, but later passed away.
Cajuso had served as a Miami Beach officer for 10 years, earning a reputation for courage and dedication to public service. Remarkably, this was not the first time he faced a life-threatening incident—eight years ago, the 33-year-old survived being run over during a police encounter in which the driver was fatally shot, NBC affiliate WTVJ reported at the time.
He is survived by his wife, three children, parents, and his MBPD family, who say they will forever honor his memory and legacy.
“This is a sad and dark day for the men and women of the Miami Beach Police Department,” Police Chief Wayne Jones said. “I ask that you keep his young family in your thoughts and prayers as they navigate this grievous process.”
Miami Beach Mayor Steven Meiner called the officer’s death “the worst of our nightmares” and said local officials are united in supporting Cajuso’s family and law enforcement colleagues.
The Florida Highway Patrol is leading the investigation into the fatal crash.
