A Florida bystander became a real-life hero when he rescued a 74-year-old man from a burning car in Clearwater.
David Calderon, a motorcyclist on his way to work on November 7, spotted a Porsche engulfed in flames and didn’t hesitate to act. Without thinking twice, he pulled the driver from the wreckage as fire roared around them.
“I didn’t really think about it. I just reacted,” Calderon told WFLA.
Dramatic footage shows Calderon dragging the elderly man to safety, aided by other quick-thinking witnesses who helped stop traffic and guided the rescue. One onlooker shouted, “Get him away from the car!” as the terrified man was moved to the sidewalk.
“It was scary. Really scary,” Calderon said. “It wasn’t just about helping somebody. The flames were shooting up from under and inside the vehicle.”

Once the driver was safe, witnesses grabbed fire extinguishers to keep the flames at bay until Clearwater firefighters arrived. The crew worked quickly to prevent the fire from reaching the fuel tank while tending to the victim, who escaped unharmed. He was treated on the scene and later taken to the hospital as a precaution.
Clearwater Fire & Rescue praised the heroism of Calderon and the other citizens. “Thank you to the hero citizens who helped save a man’s life after he was unable to get out of his burning car,” the department wrote on social media. “And thanks to our crew members who responded to provide medical care and ensure the car didn’t explode.”
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
