A Chicago mom is speaking out after she and her nine-year-old son were brutally attacked by a group of students just steps away from a local elementary school.

Corshawnda Hatter, 33, says she was walking with her son and young daughter on Monday afternoon when a group of kids began following them near Orville T. Bright Elementary on the city’s Far South Side. According to NBC Chicago, video of the assault — now viral — shows the boy clinging to his mother as several youths punch, kick, and shove them to the ground.

Hatter says her daughter watched the entire attack unfold.

“I told my kids to cross the street with me so they wouldn’t get jumped, but they followed us,” Hatter told Fox 32. “They hit my son first, dragged me into the grass, and pulled my baby’s hair. I’m trying to get justice for my son. I’m grateful for everyone supporting us.”

Chicago police confirmed that a 33-year-old woman and a nine-year-old boy were hit “multiple times” near the school shortly after 3 p.m. Both were taken to the hospital in serious condition, according to The Independent. Investigators are reviewing video footage, and as of Wednesday, no arrests have been made.

The attack sparked outrage across the city. Mayor Brandon Johnson called the incident “deeply disturbing” and said the children involved must be held accountable. “We must not normalize this type of senseless violence,” he wrote on X.

Dozens of community members gathered outside the school on Tuesday to show support. Hatter spoke at the rally, saying the attack was connected to ongoing bullying at the school.

“I can’t sleep,” she said. “I keep seeing my son calling my name for help, and I couldn’t do anything. That’s what hurts the most.”

Illinois State Senator Willie Preston also condemned the violence, saying, “No mother should be that helpless, especially in her own community.”

Chicago Public Schools released a statement saying officials were “horrified” by the incident and are working with police and the family. The district emphasized that schools aim to provide a safe environment where conflicts can be addressed and resolved, and that any violations of the Student Code of Conduct will be handled appropriately.

The investigation is still active as the community pushes for justice.

  1. The police should go after the trash these kids call parents since they were responsible for raising them and instead let the streets do that. So sick of lowlifes like this getting off with bs probation and community center.
