A routine hike in the Scottish Highlands turned into a fight for survival when a woman was suddenly surrounded and crushed by a herd of cattle — an ordeal she says she never thought she would live through.

Mary-Jane Parker, 61, was walking with her dog, Lola, near Newtonmore in August when the terrifying encounter unfolded, according to reports from BBC.

Parker said the cows were hidden behind a rise in the landscape, and she didn’t see them until she rounded the mound and found herself just feet away. Within moments, the herd closed in. One cow lowered its head and began thumping the ground — a warning sign she immediately recognized as danger.

“I was terrified. I couldn’t escape,” Parker recalled.

Lola panicked, slipped out of her collar, and ran from the scene. Parker wasn’t so lucky.

She said she was crushed between two cows as the herd surged forward, sweeping her off her feet and carrying her along as they charged. At one point, a strap from her backpack snagged on a cow’s leg, dragging her across the ground before she was thrown violently back down.

“I thought I was done for,” she said. “I thought that was where it would all end for me.”

The attack didn’t stop there. Parker said she was tossed into the air and slammed back to the ground as the cattle lingered around her. Lying injured and helpless, she spotted her phone roughly 25 feet away but couldn’t reach it.

“At any moment, one could kill me — even by accident,” she said, describing the wait as torture.

Fortunately, she had a Garmin tracking device in her backpack and managed to send an SOS alert. Fearing the cattle would trample her again, Parker made a desperate decision: she played dead.

For about 45 minutes, she lay completely still.

“I could feel one animal snuffling at my head,” she said. “Another was licking my bleeding wounds, while a third kept pawing at my foot.”

It was then she realized the full extent of her injuries. Her left calf had been ripped open from knee to ankle, leaving muscle exposed. She crossed her other leg over the wound in an effort to protect it and repeated a mantra in her head to stay awake and breathing.

Eventually, fellow hikers arrived and managed to chase the cattle away. They reassured Parker that Lola was safe, and moments later, police and paramedics reached her after receiving the SOS alert.

First responders quickly realized her injuries were too severe for a standard ambulance. A helicopter from Scotland’s Charity Air Ambulance was called in, giving Parker renewed hope as it landed nearby.

She was flown to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary, where doctors treated extensive injuries including 10 broken ribs, a fractured sternum, a broken hand, severe leg trauma, bruised lungs, blood in her chest wall, and widespread bruising across her head and body.

“The pain was crippling,” Parker said. “I’ve never experienced anything like it.”

After multiple surgeries, including skin grafts, she was discharged from the hospital just 10 days later.

Today, Parker says she doesn’t take a single day for granted.

“I’m so grateful every morning when I wake up and know I’m still alive,” she said. “Being given a second chance is an incredible gift.”
