A rescue mission on Africa’s tallest mountain ended in tragedy after a helicopter crashed on Mount Kilimanjaro, killing all five people on board — including two tourists who were being flown off the mountain for medical treatment.
The crash happened Christmas Eve along a popular climbing route between Barafu Camp and the Kibo Summit on Mount Kilimanjaro. While the summit rises to nearly 19,000 feet, local police said the helicopter went down at an altitude of roughly 13,000 feet.
According to a statement from Tanzania National Parks, those killed included the pilot, a local doctor, a tour guide, and two tourists from the Czech Republic. Authorities said the helicopter was in the middle of a medical evacuation when the crash occurred.
Photos from the scene showed wreckage scattered across rocky terrain, with smoke rising from the remains of the aircraft.
Kilimanjaro Regional Police Commander Simon Maigwa said the helicopter was operated by Kilimanjaro Aviation, a company that specializes in chartered flights and emergency medical evacuations on the mountain.
The Tanzania Civil Aviation Authority confirmed that an investigation is underway and will follow international aviation safety standards to determine what caused the crash.
Fatal aviation accidents on Mount Kilimanjaro are rare. The last major incident occurred in 2008, when a small plane crashed near the mountain’s Mawenzi peak, killing four tourists. The pilot survived but was seriously injured.
Mount Kilimanjaro draws more than 50,000 climbers each year from around the world, many of them tackling the iconic peak for charity, personal challenges, or once-in-a-lifetime adventure. The mountain has hosted countless memorable climbs, including fundraising expeditions and record-setting feats.
This week’s crash has cast a somber shadow over the world-famous destination, underscoring the risks involved in high-altitude rescue operations and adventure tourism — even on routes climbed by thousands each year.
Authorities said updates will be released as investigators learn more about what led to the deadly accident.
