A joyous New Year’s Eve celebration turned into a horrifying disaster after a fire and explosion ripped through a crowded bar in the Swiss Alps, leaving dozens feared dead and roughly 100 people seriously injured, according to authorities and media reports.

The blaze broke out around 1:30 a.m. local time at Le Constellation, a popular nightlife spot in the ski resort town of Crans-Montana, Switzerland, during what police said was a packed holiday party. Panic erupted as flames tore through the venue, trapping patrons inside.

Authorities have not released an official death toll, but multiple officials cited in media reports estimate that around 40 people may have been killed. Identification has been slowed because many victims suffered severe burns, officials said.

Investigators are now examining whether party pyrotechnics or an open flame ignited the bar’s ceiling. Authorities emphasized there is no indication the incident was an attack.

The scale of the tragedy prompted a massive emergency response. Helicopters and dozens of ambulances rushed the injured to nearby hospitals, which were quickly overwhelmed as burn victims poured in. Some of the injured were reported to be in critical condition.

The incident sent shockwaves through Switzerland and the international ski community, casting a dark shadow over what was meant to be a night of celebration. Officials said the investigation is ongoing as they work to determine exactly how the deadly fire started and to identify the victims.
