A terrifying act of subway violence jolted New York City in the early hours of the new year after a deranged attacker shoved a 72-year-old man into the side of an oncoming train in the Bronx, police said.
The shocking incident unfolded around 3:30 a.m. Thursday at the 161st Street–Yankee Stadium station, where the elderly victim was standing on the platform waiting for a Manhattan-bound No. 4 train. According to police, the suspect suddenly pushed the man without warning, sending him flying into the moving train.
Emergency responders rushed to the scene as stunned riders looked on. Medics transported the victim to NYC Health + Hospitals/Lincoln, where he was listed in stable condition.
Police said the suspect was apprehended at the station shortly after the attack. The New York City Police Department said charges were pending as the investigation continued.
The incident marks the first reported case of random subway violence in New York City in the new year, renewing concerns about safety in the city’s transit system — especially during overnight hours when platforms are sparsely populated.
No motive has been released, and authorities have not yet identified the suspect.
